Accessing Mental Health Care

Paying for Higher Levels of Care

Paying for mental health care can be a challenge, even with insurance. Many providers do not take insurance, and those that do may be difficult to make appointments with. Additionally, higher levels of care such as inpatient or residential facilities can be very costly. Fortunately, resources are available to support you with affording care and getting the help you need.

Charity Care

Most hospitals waive medical bills for low-income patients, however most patients are unaware of these programs. Check to see if your facility offers Charity Care. Helpful resources to support enrolling in Charity Care include:

DollarFor: a nonprofit organization that helps people access charity care and advocates on their behalf.

GoodBill: negotiates hospital bills for you, including reviewing the bill for errors and discount opportunities.

Financial Assistance Organizations

Offer financial support for copays, premiums, deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses for essential treatments and medications. Some organizations include:

HealthWell Foundation

PAN Foundation

Patient Advocate Foundation

Consult with insurance

Many residential programs do not take insurance. However, you may still be able to negotiate with your insurance to cover the expenses, especially if you have out-of-network insurance.
