Finding Inpatient Hospitalization Facilities

Higher levels of care for mental health challenges include a range of treatment programs and services that offer a greater intensity, frequency of contact, and/or duration compared to traditional outpatient therapy & psychiatric services. Higher levels of care for mental health challenges include (but aren’t limited to) inpatient hospitalization, residential programs, partial hospitalization programs, and intensive outpatient programs.

Consult with your mental health provider(s)

Discuss with your mental health providers (if you have any). This can also include a primary care physician. Discuss the options available for getting more support (including partial hospitalization, residential, etc.) and ask for recommendations for inpatient facilities.

Use free directories and supports

The following resources are a helpful starting point for finding inpatient facilities near you.

FindTreatment.gov: a website for locating treatment facilities near you. In some cases, you may be able to directly admit through a referral from a mental health provider. Many psychiatric facilities will only admit after a person has been admitted to the emergency room.

NAMI Affiliate: contact an affiliate at your local National Alliance on Mental Illness for free guidance with finding inpatient programs.
